The students of the Erasmus Mundus Master of Science in Geospatial Technologies hosted their annual and the 14th edition of the conference GeoMundus. It was held on October 21-22, 2022 at the New University of Lisbon, Information Management School, Portugal. The specific approach of GeoMundus is a free conference organized by students for students.
Highlights of the scientific programme were the four invited keynote speakers:
Prof. Dr. Werner Kuhn, emeritus of UCSB (University of California, Santa Barbara), presented Core Concepts of Spatial Information, which aim to provide a theoretical foundation to clarify and to strengthen the conceptual foundations of GIS (Geographic Information Systems). Prof. Dr. Michael Goodchild, one of the pioneers of GIScience, presented a concept of weak reproducibility for researching phenomena that are embedded in space and time. Dr. Ilse Kremer, Netherlands/UK, presented how to use deep learning for archaeological site discovery on earth observation data and reported about her path to direct her academic research as a PhD into a start-up company. Prof. Dr. Ilse Aben, Netherlands Institute for Space Research, presented how to use satellites to support governments and companies to reduce methane emissions.
The further programme included scientific presentations of students’ papers, a career development session, an alumni session, and three parallel hands-on workshops.
