Students’ average monthly expenses

It is difficult to say exactly how much money a student needs per month. The cost of living varies from city to city. And, of course, the amount of money you will need greatly depends on how economically you live.

  • Accommodation (furnished, including utiilities, individual or shared, etc.): ~ 300 – 500 € per month
  • Living expenses (food, clothes, personal services, etc.): 300 – 400 € per month
  • Monthly public transport ticket: 40 € per month in Lisbon, 20 € per month in Castellón, 0 € (included in tuition fees) in Münster
  • Insurance (health, personal liability, etc.): 40 – 100 € per month
  • Books/study materials: 50 – 70 € per month

 

For non-EU students, the German visa requirements are to prove financial resources of currently (January 2023) 935 €/month. Typically, the money has to be deposited on a blocked bank account for the entire visa period. A current alternative (which might change) is that the parents guarantee financial support through a declaration of the income and financial situation, which can be done by an informal declaration and must be prooven by a bank transfer by means of a bank statement.
