Students’ average monthly expenses
It is difficult to say exactly how much money a student needs per month. The cost of living varies from city to city. And, of course, the amount of money you will need greatly depends on how economically you live.
Accommodation (furnished, including utiilities, individual or shared, etc.): ~ 300 – 500 € per month
Living expenses (food, clothes, personal services, etc.): 300 – 400 € per month
Monthly public transport ticket: 40 € per month in Lisbon, 20 € per month in Castellón, 0 € (included in tuition fees) in Münster
Insurance (health, personal liability, etc.): 40 – 100 € per month
Books/study materials: 50 – 70 € per month
For non-EU students, the German visa requirements are to prove financial resources of currently (January 2023) 935 €/month. Typically, the money has to be deposited on a blocked bank account for the entire visa period. A current alternative (which might change) is that the parents guarantee financial support through a declaration of the income and financial situation, which can be done by an informal declaration and must be prooven by a bank transfer by means of a bank statement.
